The Natural Fortress
Chapter 1
Schools Out
"The largest flat top mountain in the world, a cone of rock surrounding the edge and more then three hundred lakes on top of it, to be put simply it is an ecosystem inside of an ecosystem, A forest inside of a desert, it is our natural fortress", Mr.Gregg said in the final minutes of Geology. "I'm not gonna lie im gonna miss Mr.Gregg" I said as my friends nodded in agreement. "Our last day of school after this we never have to walk into this gay 8-9 school" Once again they nodded in agreement as we finally walked out of that crap hole of a school forever.
It was summer the best part of the year for any high-schooler especially one that had been deprived of a proper freshman year. And as tradition goes the first thing we did when we walked out the doors was flip off the school. To be put simply this school was hated. You see the actual high-school was so full that they had to take the freshman out and put them in with the 8th graders and everyone hated it. The 8th graders because they had to take even harder courses then before. The 9th graders because we were not able to go off campus for lunch and nobody messes with our Taco Bell. Anyway back on track. We went immediately to pack our things because there was nothing better then a group trip up to the Grand Mesa with friends and maybe a few girls.
Chapter 2
The Trip
This year was better then any of the past as there was no parents coming along. One of my friends had finally gotten his license this year and even though we weren't legally aloud to ride with him for another 3 months we really didn't want to go with parents. We didn't know who all was coming all we knew was that the entire 9th grade was invited and if past trips have shown anything it's that that campground will be full. We were sleeping in tents so we decided to take the long way up for fun. This road was called lands end road for a reason and this reason was that it was a one way 63 mile road up an over 11,000 foot high mountain. This road was not only long but if you were to go off of that edge even an inch you were looking at a cliff all the way to the bottom of a mountain. Sounds fun right? Well we thought so and nearly 3 hours later we had made it up that mountain. Luckily we had left early so there were still a few camping spots open and we made sure we got one of them.
Later that night after we'd had a nice nap we met up with a few more friends and had a barbecue and thats when things began to happen. We started up our barbecue with the simple part which was gathering the firewood. A normal task for a camping trip. We headed out into the woods and found a nice area with plenty of wood to chop and gather. On our way back we began hearing noises. These noises started off from far away and we believed it was simply a coyote howling or a moose and we ignored the noises for most of the night. Once we had gathered the firewood and finished cooking some hot-dogs and hamburgers we sat around the fire and tried to scare each-other even though we knew none of us had any new scary stories to tell. That's when we heard the noise again but this time much louder and much more menacing. "What the fuck was that?", I asked.
"Probably just a coyote or a moose maybe a bear if were lucky", my friend said.
"How in hell does that makes us lucky genius", another friend said. The girls had been utterly silent up until this point when they told us to shut up we were about to ask why when we heard it. It was a panting so deep that we knew it wasn't a coyote or a moose probably not even a bear, it almost sounded human. We tried to act like we didn't hear it but we all were fully aware of it. It had been almost 10 minutes of that panting when we heard movement in the bushes near us not more then 20 feet away and that's when we saw it. Eyes glowing red eyes like you would see in a picture gone bad or a dog late at night.
"Holy Shit", someone said "It's a fucking bear".
"That's no bear I've ever seen" another said. Meanwhile those eyes that shined like the devils just stayed there watching us. They were at a height that was near 8 feet in the air and towered over us. Eventually god answered all of our prayers and the eyes turned and walked or floated or whatever away from us and we all went to bed. The next day we swore to never speak of it again.
Chapter 3
3 Years later
It was the last day of senior year we got out before everyone else and it made us even more restless to end the day because we knew where we were having this grad party and it was on the Grand Mesa. We had rented out an entire ski lodge and luckily for us it was still ski season and we planned on making the most of the week we would be up there.
We were already packed when school ended and we planned on making it up there first and getting the best rooms. We even got to leave early because our last class had nothing going on we ran to the car jumped in and sped out of the parking lot at speeds that are frowned upon by the best nascar racers. We took the short way up this time and made it up hours before anyone else. We once again took a nap the second we got our rooms.
We were woke up by a few of our friends banging on our doors as loud as they could. They said that they wanted to guy snowboarding at night they thought it would be fun. We were hesitant at first as we all flashed back to that night but we all knew it was miles away from here where it happened to we went anyway. When we got back everything was quiet which we immediately knew was odd since it was only 11. We got there and found a group of people silently sobbing another dozen or so were just looking at the woods in complete confusion as to what they had seen. We went to the sobbing group and asked what had happened. They said they heard a scream outside and saw one of their friends being dragged by something or someone. They said it was 10 feet tall at least and that they couldn't see anything else, but about 30 seconds after it walked into the tree line they heard a blood curdling scream much worse then before and that since then they had been waiting to hear another sound. Hoping that he was still alive even though they knew better.
Once we got a larger group together we walked into those woods where they said it went and followed the tracks in the snow. We really didn't want to go but we knew that it would impress some of the people there (mostly the girls) so we went anyway. It didn't take long to see why the guy who got dragged out here screamed. About a minute into the walk there we found not only a little blood but his shirt with an obvious bite mark in it. We all thought the worst. We kept on walking for about 5 minutes before we decided to turn back and when we did we saw him, and it.
It was just as the girls had explained it before. It was huge easily 10 feet tall probably more and the guy behind him was in horrible shape. All of us knew that this thing could probably take all of us out if it tried but i guess it didn't because seeing the amount of us obviously spooked it and it ran away at speeds that not even usain bolt could match. We went to help the guy it had attacked and just looking at him i knew we all thought he was dead. He was covered in blood not moving and if not for his chest moving up and down in a fast and spastic fashion we might have all just left and said we saw nothing. We helped him up and other then the blood he was actually in fairly good shape but he was in shock. We walked out to the edge of the woods and told the girls to go inside we then washed all of the blood off of him and it was then that we saw the bite. It was definitely a huge bite and it had force behind it because it broke the skin however it was not a menacing bite. Judging by the size of the bite and the ease that it broke the skin with it could have killed him whenever it wanted too.
We all helped to drag him out of the woods to get him some help. Little did we know the "creature" was not gone. Due to having to pull a man out of the woods it took nearly 20 minutes to get back and it was 20 minutes of pure hell. The creature had been following us the entire time, we could not see it this time, but we could hear it. The distinctive panting noise that sounded almost like a sprinter who had finished a race. Luckily we made it back before the thing decided to kidnap another one of us. An ambulance was already waiting at the lodge and we thought it was all over. We could pack our stuff, leave and never come back. The creature however had other plans for us.
