You use them in place of a comma conjunction or a period to link two complete sentences together, but only if the sentences are closely linked. He went to the store, and they were out of bread. He went to the store; they were out of bread. The store was out of bread. Joe bought tortillas instead. The store was out of bread; Joe bought tortillas instead.
