Just figured I'd throw a whole topic out there..will add later when I think of it..

Astronomy stuff; String theory. Don't know squat about it, but from watchin pbs and all, it's trying to explain how everything in the universe is held together, along with dark matter? Tried using wiki, found it useful, but the physics flew over mah head.. Also, Wuts with the higgs boson deal? Heard it all over the news, then suddenly no news about it o.O

Tech stuff; noob here. Just figuring out best tech stuff out there. From what I understand, to build a custom machine (usually desktops), it's probably a lot cheaper if you know what you're doing. Wuts the difference between the processors? For example, standard clockrate of just 1 processor at 4 ghz, vs a quad core at 3.2 ghz? Also, as long as i remember, intel vs amd for processor wars; intel usually has higher clock rate, that amd is always catching up. Also helps to have a motherboard that is compatable too. For hard drives, solid state drives is no movable pieces, as opposed to regular hdd..wasn't there issues in the 1st gen ssd's? And what's the deal with graphics cards? a mid-range is fine for most, but just curious what's the latest out there; last I checked (haven't been keeping current on news), there's ddr5 at 2 gh on one graphics card..Have they increased that? Also ram..I think commercial is ddr3, highest in 1 stick is 4gb? Along different lines, software..usually use libreoffice or openoffice, winamp for music, firefox or chrome. Avast or avg for antivirus? Definitely use malwarebytes. I used to use ad-aware, but now it seems bloatware. Since I have multiple emails by different systems, pidgin seems fine, haven't tried trillian yet. Foxit instead of bloatware adobe; I don't need anything fancy. Also, ccleaner. I don't edit pictures or movies, but what's good out there? Heard blender and gimp was good freeware. corel paint shop pro is paid, but good alternative? Adobe master collection may be good, but expensive. For OS, windows 7 is fine for me, don't see the need to switch to win8 yet...Hardware for apple seems overpriced, but had limited experience in software. Guess I should google how to partition the hard drive for ubuntu..just trying that out later.

Cars: 4 wheel drive is always drivetrain split, regardless of the situation, vs all wheel drive, where the drivetrain might go to front or rear wheel drive if there's slip? Unrelated, wonder which is the fastest in the world; Veryon or Hennessey Venom gt? For off roading, there's always been longer wheelbase vs shorter wheelbase; ie pickup truck or expedition vs jeep wrangler. Any preference? Have no idea about motorcycles, but from what i've heard, the brakes and throttle (and possibly shifting gears) is different than a car; on the handlebars. Anyone know about this?

/will rant later Pfft
//figured to make it a general topic, so everyone won't spam in a speicific thread, like the physics problem with different topics hehe..

The Tech stuff:

For CPU's, I would recommend intel as AMD CPU's blow ape shit.

For Graphics Card, I would recommend the new Nvidia series, unless you want to stick with old school cards, then ATI is the best choice. Reason: AMD graphics drivers blow ape shit.

For RAM, I would recommend anything with 8GB or higher DDR3 series.

Last, but not least, for Operating System, I would recommend Windows 7 as it's the best operating system to run latest games and apps. It's not ape shit like Windows Vista and Windows 8. (Windows XP is old and outdated, but was only good at its time.)

Haha okay... yeah, never figured out the whole intel vs amd thing, but okay...there's so many friggin processors out there tho..

So bottom line, amd sucks? lol..for everyday use, i'd probably get a pc that has limited graphics..it's everyday use anway, but for serious gaming, definitely not getting an integrated graphics card..

Thought the actual ram sticks only went as high as 4 gb per stick..Guess I have to look again..

yeah xp was good but outdated..vista, didn't even try..have win7 now. Win8 I heard mixed reviews..the whole flap over no start button, and the whole gui was different..so don't know lol..

also usually try to keep up with magazines like pcworld, maximum pc, etc..

AMD is like a tablet processor, and Intel is a PC processor.

Tech: Stem cell hamburger.

As an alternative to resource-gobbling cows, researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands have developed a lab-grown hamburger woven out of 20,000 bovine muscle fibers. But don't expect to slap two of these horror patties together for a "Big Cylon" anytime soon -- the R&D for this one burger was $332,000.But what would $300K worth of genetic manipulation mean for your next cookout? Whereas most burgers are defined by descriptors such as "marbling" and "this used to be alive," critics have deemed this replicant chuck's taste palatable (if they close their eyes) and said that it resembled a real slider "from a distance." It's never a good sign when you're grading a meal by the number of feet you are away from it (aka "the durian scale"Wink. We give it three months before the Maastricht team fesses up that they spent 95 percent of their funding on Sea-Doos and the remaining 5 percent on a hobo's lymph nodes.

Yeah, heard about the lab grown hamburger; but isn't it cloning and genetically modified food? Until the public relations and the science goes positive and people get over the fear, it'll just be out of mass production.

fan vs liquid cooling systems for pc?

?? I'm still a noob here..care to clarify? lol

I still don't trust myself to build a pc so I wouldn't get a water cooling system yet either plato..

lol vulture...I think half of the gripe about win8 is the metro UI...as for amd, i'm an average user, but that seems to be working fine..

It's just something I though about before, I tried to look it up online but can't find a thing on it. But what I'm trying to say, if we can keep going smaller and smaller forever and always find things that make up things lol

But I believe there is a limit where you can get. Imagine zooming out too, if the universe is infinite, mind blowing xD

Sorta get where you're getting at...trying to make things smaller..there's an absolute limit on that those as well?

About the universe though, isn't it expanding constantly? We don't know exactly how large it is. Even at the speed of light, the stars at the edge of the universe would take a lot of time to get here.

Also, How is moore's law in computer tech still valid? From my understanding, it's about microchips within the processors that would double within a certain time...

firstly, to BrickSquad:

www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/phy00/phy00521.htm

read up.

now, to this lazy target guy, I'll address your many points one by one I suppose:
  • yes, building your own computer is vastly cheaper compared to buying a pre-made one.
  • as you increase a CPUs core speed, you generate a lot of heat. at some point it becomes impractical to continue pushing the envelope. with smaller architectures, it became possible to embed two or four or eight cores onto a single chip. creating a 4GHz processor for personal computers is a much less convenient task for chip designers than putting two 2GHz processors on one chip. thus at least on paper, your comparison would be more accurate if you were comparing a single-core processor at 4.0 GHz to a quad-core at 1.0 Ghz. in practical application like running programs the quad core would most likely be faster as multiple core processors can run multiple instructions at the same time (the whole benefit/point of having a multi-core processor).
  • intel vs amd doesn't have anything to do with clock rate, both manufacture processors that run at 4.0GHz and above stock (without modification, from factory). the general argument is that amd is best for budget, while intel is the best for raw power. basically, I would heartily recommend AMD if your budget for a processor was anywhere under $250. above that, it's really best to go with intel if you really need anything more powerful.
  • it doesn't help to have a motherboard that is compatible - it is a complete requirement. if you try to put a processor in to a motherboard that doesn't have the exact same socket type, the pins on the bottom of the processor will bend and pretty much ruin your processor.
  • you are correct about SSDs with the moving parts thing. no idea about the first generation SSDs but I can guarantee you that all SSDs on the market right now work perfectly - I'm posting from one right now...
  • I could go on about graphics cards of course, but all you need to know really is that the most powerful single graphics card for games out there right now is the Geforce GTX Titan - that you can look at here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130898 the ram it uses is 6GB 384-bit GDDR5 running at 876MHz and it is $1069.00, if you don't want to click the link.
  • a graphics card running at 2GHz does not currently exist yet - the highest out there is 1058 (without overclocking/modification).
  • you are correct that the current standard for ram is ddr3, but right now you can go buy a single stick of ram with 32GB of memory for about $2000.
  • I highly recommend Microsoft Security Essentials over any other anti-virus, anti-malware, etc etc: it's easily the most unobtrusive anti-virus I have ever used.
  • gimp is a great photo editor, paint.net if you want things a little more simple. I have experience with Correll and it is definitely the most simple but also the most powerful/versatile, but it isn't free.
  • sony vegas or the adobe suite for video editing

that's about it. no idea about the car stuff but that should answer you for the computers. anything else? this is fun

  • sony vegas or the adobe suite for video editing

that's about it. no idea about the car stuff but that should answer you for the computers. anything else? this is fun

Thanks! Grin

So on a retail pc, eg alienware, when they say a pc has a 4ghz quad processor, it's basically 1ghz on each processor for all 4, correct? just odd phrasing..part of why it's a quad processor is so it won't overheat..got it..

oh okay..I guess it's just what people want on intel vs amd..

yeah, have no experience in motherboards lol..they don't change as quickly.. guess I have to read up on that...

yeah, first gen ssd's were expensive, and heard it was frowned upon for defragging..not sure why though..think the next gen ssd's are vastly improved; think retail has 500 gigs at under 1k?

yeah, graphics card are a whole different story lol..yowza though..1 ghz.. also 1 high end graphics card or 2 moderate ones? http://www.pcworl...cards.html
Just find it also interesting that the ram of the graphics card and most don't show the clock speed that much..

Geez loll Dat ddr3..ddr4 might be coming out.. quick google search showed 64 bit system 192 gig ram support depending on software..yikes though..when a computer has 5000 programs running though, once you close most of them, doesn't the ram stay high? saw a few programs offering that they can lower ram so that the pc doesn't fry..

haha okay..antivirus software and all that, i've read different reports and all, wasn't sure which one to believe.. so many different ones..heard norton was bloatware, and mcafee wasn't much better..kaspersky, bitdefender was not as much bloatware, but not sure if it's good and all..could go on..

Right now, have no video to edit, but just figured i'd throw it out there so in the future and all..
i'll try gimp then lol..my drawing skills is limited to stick figures Pfft

Just afraid of when building a custom pc, none of the parts I buy are compatible, since I read about it, but actually haven't done it myself..DOH! Pfft

/off topic..

Watch Mythbusters often, but rumor has it that they've gone wacky and don't do myths as much and focus more on explosions and all..haven't seen all of the episodes so wouldn't know..

Watch shows like Bear grhylls survival shows..like to watch, but wouldn't last a day in the wild myself LOL..
Also interesting because it would fit into the surviving a zombie apocalypse premise..what would everyone bring along and do if it happened? carry everything vs traveling light? There's a humor book, max brooks zombie survivial guide; meant to be fun and lighthearded, but still an interesting read.

also thought of sports cars; for exotic cars, how much more expensive is it to build a mid engine vehicle? it's usualy better for weight distribution, but haven't heard of a v12 in a mid-engine vehicle..

/will think of more later LOL

Apparently I wasn't paying attention Frown But from what I gathered, not that much? It's due to the reflection of the light or something? So it's misculine..if I got the info right...

//figured to make it a general topic, so everyone won't spam in a speicific thread, like the physics problem with different topics hehe..

okay.

firstly, to BrickSquad:

www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/phy00/phy00521.htm

read up.

now, to this lazy target guy, I'll address your many points one by one I suppose:

  • yes, a single core at 4.0GHz would get incredibly hot (with current technology).
  • partly what people want but mostly what they can afford, or care to afford
  • defragging will always be bad for SSDs because the way they are built makes it so that the more they are written to and read from the slower they get. under normal use, an SSD will maybe be 5mbps slower in like a year (or something around that). by defragging and SSD, large amounts of data is being read and written very fast for a long time, decreasing the speed and life of the SSD, not making it faster like it does for HDDs.
  • graphics depends on what you will be doing. renders? gaming? which games, etc.. not many games can really take full advantage of having two graphics cards right now - as in, completely doubling your fps. I'd say go with a single powerful card overall. also I don't really understand what you're saying? "just find it also interesting that the ram of the graphics card and most don't show the clock speed that much" - can you clarify or something? lol
  • as far as I know ddr4 will be a while from now, as right now it looks like manufacturers are just increasing clock frequency of ddr3 higher and higher rather than going to ddr4. don't know why, I'll look it up I guess. no matter what you are doing, in a desktop pc even the busiest video or photo editor will not need more than 32GB of ram. when you see specs of 192, 256GB of ram they're talking about high end servers. and no, after you close a program the ram space it was using is cleared.
  • kapersky, bitdefender are good but you have to pay, mcafee and norton are bad and you have to pay, security essentials is good and free.
  • when building a custom pc, remember to pick the processor first. that will decide your overall budget for the build, the socket type needed for the motherboard, the type of ram you need to use, and even what graphics to buy.

Motorcycles:
Left handlebar - Clutch lever (when pulled, engine in neutral)
Right handlebar - Front brakes (usually 2 disc)
Left foot - Shifter (middle=neutral, down 1 click=first gear, up 1/2 click= neutral or up 1 click=2nd gear, up another click=3rd, all the way until 6th, back down 4 1/2 clicks=neutral, etc)
Right foot - Rear brake (usually 1 disc brake)
