Port Forwarding Problem

Hello everyone, if anyone has noticed I have not been in servers as much as I used to be and this is because of my connection. It is not that it is slow but my ping jumps from lows to highs very randomly and makes for poor gameplay as I can never have a reliable lead. So I tried forwarding some ports.
Halo Ports according to my router

So I did exactly as instructed but nothing, it says my ports are opened but when I tested them they were not open, even when tested without pinging. DMZ is set up to this laptop as well. If anyone could help me out with this port problem it would be a great help.

I have very bad internet and my ping spikes horribly if there is anyone else on my wifi. My desktop is wired to the internet so that helps a little with speed. Are you playing on wireless? Is anyone else in your household on the internet while you play? Are they streaming videos like netflix? Just try and make sure whenever your playing halo that your the only one using your net otherwise their may not be enough available bandwidth.

Im really the only one that uses the wifi, My xbox is hooked up via ethernet, put wanted to forward ports for xbox so I could join my friends games. Which I already should since I have open NAT. I make sure that Im the only one on the wifi when I play halo.

If you find that your ping is more stable late at night or really early in the mornings, its because the other people that are normally taking all the bandwidth are offline and you get more to yourself. In that case, you could try wiring your laptop if you haven't already, or ask the people to stop watching their movie while you play halo.

If the ping spikes aren't a bandwidth issue then it might be a pc issue. Things like windows updates, virus scans, and things like that can cause your ping to go funny. Other than that their isn't much else that can cause extreme ping spikes unless your net is just really funny or if your xbox live is doing things like updates.

Few questions:
1) Are you on wireless?
2) Do you have a router with an open security access?
3) What's your network download and upload speed and if you have a router, how many connections are logged to it?
4) Answer those top questions first and then we can continue onto the next one.

1) Laptop is running wireless
2) WPA2-Personal security password
3)Download speed is 1.15 mbps, upload is 0.96 mbps, Our package advertises 2mbps download speed, 512 mbps upload speed and 2 connections.
The ping jumps are around 50-200 ping randomly, When I search for a halo server some pings will be up to the thousands but go down to normal after I refresh them.

Your main problem is wireless period. Halo was not designed for wireless gameplay. Ethernet your connection in order to get good play. Wireless =1/2 Ethernet direct connection thus your high pings. If other people are using the wireless it only makes it worse. That's your problem. |

Yep. Wireless is like a caveman connection. lol
Best solution is to get an ethernet cable and plug it directly into your router as what Herc had said.

That is a problem and I will try to playing with Ethernet and see how it compares to how I usually play. But the reason I made this thread is my router says I have opened ports but when tested they are still closed.

Trust me, you will see a huge difference between an ethernet wire plugged in from laptop to router compared to a shitty wireless signal.

Do you have CCleaner? I would recommend you getting that and cleaning out all the cookies + cache. If it still does not work, Xfire me and we will try another thing out with Registry cleaning.

Try doing that now and then play it with the wired ethernet cable plugged in. Also I would recommend you to first turn off your laptop. Then turn off the modem and finally the router. Wait about 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, turn on the modem back on first and wait for all the lights to go solid on the modem. Next, turn on the router and wait for the lights to go solid on that as well. And finally turn on your laptop again and see if you get any ping spikes afterwards.

I have dsl and also live in a location where it is pretty much the only provider. I get about 2.5 down and .5 upload and it is terrible for gaming. I get ping spikes if anyone else at all is on my net. The bullet registration with this speed is horrible and I can still lag or warp even when Im only on my net.
My net is wired too so I know how bad gaming could get for you with a lower speed and wireless.
Sorry hypno there isn't much you can do to make a shitty net better other than play wired and it won't do much with dsl speed.
