Bridal Kidnapping

I know the video is a Vice documentary, but hey, it's video evidence at the most.
Bridal kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan is a common tradition. A young girl is kidnapped and married off against her will with the girl's family powerless to do anything to help her. Many girls commit suicide because of bridal kidnapping and it is one of the country's biggest problems today.
Here's the question I pose to all of you guys:
Should we value and keep TRADITION ~OR~ eradicate culture for the betterment of SOCIETY?
This is an atrocious act to a WESTERNER's eyes but to a native Kyrgyzstanian, it's quite normal and common. Woman live in constant fear of being kidnapped.
I want to hear about what you guys think before I say my side of the question.

I respect the tradition because it's part of their culture. But I think women living in constant fear and paranoia everyday is very stressful.
We are suppose to live happy and have equal rights. The tradition seems like a male dominant thing. Women should have the right to say no.
It's not about eradicating a culture, it's about showing the mistakes made in history, and it's up to us to help fix it.
I heard in other countries they o it, but the women are expecting it and it's up to the family to stop it. Which sounds more reasonable.

I basically agree. But in a country like this, don't you think the best bet is to eradicate this part of their history? Just an open question. Bridal kidnapping brings absolutely no benefit to anyone. |

Well not eradicate, but first educate the people first on why it is wrong, and slowly or quickly people will stop doing it. It takes time, patience and a good leader.
It's all about putting money into school and to teach the right things that are "de facto" such as kidnapping is wrong to any human being. |

How can you say that "kidnapping is de facto wrong"? That's a personal opinion of yours, not an objective fact. There's a difference between encouraging children to evaluate the situation at hand and take responsibility for their actions, and enforcing doctrine on them by telling them what they have to do and what they can't do. The former produces intelligent, conscientious humans who can make good judgements whereas the latter leads to mindless drones who can't think for themselves.
Education is the key to the future, but it needs to be done in a way that doesn't stifle important curiosity and scepticism. You can't force people to adopt the same view point as you, but you can lay before them the situation and encourage them to work out for themselves what they think is right or wrong.

I agree with you 100% right there. That's what I want to do, lay down the plans, show them an example of a place that follows, and hopefully all follow through because of how perfect those plans are. |
