This debate consists of three parts.
Firstly, debate over how violence is defined. (Remember, dictionaries are debatable)
Is it any physical touch, is it anything which harms us, is it merely the action of harshness, or is it something else entirely? Debate.
Secondly, debate over whether violence is a prominent issue in the world and whether it could ever be stopped.
Finally, debate over whether violence is at all necessary. Are there advantages to violence? Is it merely a dark force which should be trampled beneath our feet? Or perhaps it is a benevolent force which all should worship?
Begin debating! |

My OED says violence is "n. 1 behaviour involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill. 2 the power of a destructive natural force. 2 strength of emotion."
The first definition sounds about right to me. I might also characterise non-physical behaviour as violent, or violent in intent, but that would probably not be strictly correct. Touching doesn't have to be violent. I wouldn't describe a warm embrace as violent!
It seems to me that violence is an issue on many levels in the world. From school playground bullying which can negatively impact children for their whole lives, to assault in the street, or even international warfare destroying millions of lives - it's clear that violence has bad effects.
Is violence necessary? I'd like to think not. I don't believe that much can be gained for society on the whole through violence. The only example of an advantage on violence that springs to minds is the rapid scientific advancements brought about by working under pressure during warfare. That doesn't mean, however, that violence is necessary for such improvements. Indeed, the billions spend on warfare would be better poured into research, not with the sole intention of wiping out fellow humans.
In the natural world, violence is ubiquitous, and one could argue that it's necessary to sustain ecosystems, in that predators much kill their prey for food, males must fight their peers for dominance to sustain social groupings that allow their species to thrive, etc. Perhaps, then, one can think along the lines of 'necessary' violence and 'unnecessary' violence. The above would be 'necessary', and any behaviour that is superfluous to the survival of the individual or the continued survival of the species is 'unnecessary'.
I think that violence of the latter type has no place is human society, and that by encouraging empathy with others we can hope to eliminate such unneeded and undesirable evil.

They may speak louder (and I think that's tenuous), but perhaps what they're saying isn't good. Violent abuse may have a stronger effect than verbal abuse, but most would agree that neither are good, so your comment of 'violence FTW' seems wholly unjustified.

violence is in human nature and will never cease to exist so long as humans roam the earth.
"can you actually beat mew...a pokemon that can learn any move in existence and ancestor to all pokemon on earth?"

When is it okay?

How can you be so sure? Is it not a concious decision to be violent, and therefore would it not be possible to stop oneself from acting in such a way?
