My current computer is broken, and is only booting into safe mode, so I can't play Halo at the moment.
I'm looking into getting a laptop for Christmas. I'll want it to be able to handle some light gaming (e.g. Halo, Minecraft, not very latest graphic intensive games), but it will be mainly for work, so I'm thinking Intel i5 Processor, with about 6GB RAM, 1TB HD. Does anyone have any recommendations of good laptops with these sort of specs? My budget is probably around £500-700 (here's a currency converter: http://www.xe.com...), depending on how good it is. Also, any advice on Windows 7 vs Windows 8 - most come with 8 standard at the moment, but I've heard that some people don't like it?
Thanks,
ninja

Alright. I'm gonna help you out a bit.
Don't use windows 8. I've tested it, and both the GUI and the programming suck. The interface for any sort of gaming at all is nasty, and the e tire thing basically is made to looks like some sort of android product. It is unprofessional using, clunky to use... Most computers come pre-booted with 7 because 8 is still being tested, so get your laptop soon.
Acre is a nice brand. I have a 300gb laptop with 3gbRAM and it was $200. You can get a ton of better computers, but def get one with an intel processor. If you want I can research for you but you sound like you're looking for a $1000 computer for a bit cheaper. Your best bet would be building one to your specifications, because building is one of the major costs.

I know you probably can't have it shipped from America but you can look these up in a computer store of website that will cater to you. Most of these are basically the same so it really boils down to your personal preference as far as price, screen size etc.
http://www.newegg...6834127831
This one is a Sony, its decent, has a large screen which can be good and bad for portability. I also has Windows 8 which I have heard is bad.
http://www.newegg...6834131394
This is a Samsung with almost identical specs to the above Sony, for about 100 dollars cheaper.
http://www.newegg...6834215426
Acer is a relatively ok brand but some would say it's shit. This does have a slightly reduced cpu but I did a comparison between the first two and this one and I'm guessing you'll barely be able to tell any difference. It has Windows 7 which is a proven os. The graphic are comparable to the others.
http://www.newegg...6834127696
Another Sony but with a much smaller screen. It is nearer the upper end of your price range though. It does have Win 7 but due to its gpu, which is less powerful than the previously listed models, I would probably put this on the lower end of my list.
http://www.newegg...6834246492
This is a Lenovo which I have heard pretty good things about. It does have Win 7 and it also has a core i7 which is more powerful than any of the others listed. Its graphics card is decent and you shouldn't have any problems playing halo or minecraft. If I were looking to buy one in your price range this would be near the top of my list probably.

I love mine, adder hates it, LOL. But it does everything I need it to for light gaming and for school. The two downsides: the built in volume sucks and there is no function key. It was cheap though. 400 bucks Hp Pavilion g6.

On acer, I have one, it sucks. It's a decent running computer, though, and I can pull more power out of it than an equal computer on another ground. Problems are slow startup, overheating problems, lack of storage space.. But they are decent. I don't like VIAO, they tend to have slow speed and they don't lie connecting to wifi. HP are beautiful, amazing graphics, and if you order one with an increased graphics card then it's better because they usually come with some shitty ones.
A plus to Acer: mine came with an ATI RADEON installed, and I didn't have to pay extra for it. Ofc I upgraded but they are nice.
Reccomend these brands :HP, most Sony comps, and Levono

I'd recommend HP, too. Good brand, and very durable.

Also, if you go to Lenovo.com (I made it clickable for ease), you can see how shitty windows 8 is.
http://www.neowin...-a-desktop
http://www.techno...that-suck/
Windows 8 can be used by a 2 year old, essentially. But here's the problem. It's tough to customize (other than presets), its interface sucks, and it bogs down and makes things difficult for people who actually know how to use a computer. It's tough to work with..
You can go back to normal view (sorta) but then you have all that space taken up by a program you can't even USE, much less get rid of.

tip, never buy a new os, when you buy a new os you are more or less paying to work out bugs for ms win 7 is the "fix" for vista, so id go 7 it works, bugs are mostly gone, ect. im running a dell xps with I5 core, 8 gigs of ram, and radeon hd 7700. cost less than 1k usd. it can play skyrim on max settings without the slowdowns you see on 360. if you really want durability i recommend a desktop. laptops are like disposable razors. work good at first but after a while you just throw em away.

Thanks for your replies.
The thing is, most new laptops seem to be only available with Windows 8. Do I really need to go out of my way to get one with Windows 7? I don't really see what the big fuss is about - just looks like a snazzier version of Windows.
About building one, I'm not sure I'd want to for a laptop, but I'd consider it if it was a desktop. I need a laptop because it's more practical for university next year.
These are ones that I've found and I think look quite good, ranked roughly in order.

The first one has Windows 7, and more than enough processing power, including a good graphics card, all for a reasonable price, so I'm leaning towards that. Anyone know about the Toshiba Satellite?

That first one looks like an excellent computer for what you are wanting to do. As far as Toshiba being good, I've heard they are decent and every Toshiba product I have ever owned (Monitors and tv) was very good and lasted for years.

The Toshiba is hands down the best there. Like Carnage said, all the Toshiba products I have owned work great, last long and are reliable. |

I do too, getting one in college
I'd like to talk a bit more about windows 8. It looks nice but it's really terrible to use (I tested it) and moving between screens sucks.
To Rawr, windows 8 and 7 have the same processing power, but Halo is too old, and 8 doesn't have support for CDs made older than anything than Vista. 7 and Vista have support for XP CDs though... And Halo was created when XP came out
You won't be able to play Halo with 8 unless you patch it (I'm pretty sure on this but don't quote me)
If you like a laptop with 8 loaded on it, there are ways to get back Win7. Lemme do some more research for you.

Any good gaming computer except expensive rip off Alienware junk.
You can customize and build your own gaming laptop from ibuypower or cyberpowerpc, and they will built/ship it with your selected customized parts which would be way cheaper than Alienware garbage.

Oh wait, ninja lives in UK?
Damn, it sucks that these type of good deal on good hardware parts websites only ship to USA/Canada/Mexico/Puerto Rico.
