this might be useful if you are getting ping kicked but i am not too sure about that but definitely will speed up your computer.
does your computer start up slow? this is how you can
speed up your computer to load up fast and speed up your computer. when you start up your computer many program loads up with the start up. you can disable those and make your computer little faster.
this is how you can do it.
go to start
type in msconfig (hit enter)

you should come up with this window
i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh555/rabinsays/systemconfiguration.jpg

click on startup tab
click on disable all (you must be loggen in as administrator)
click ok and click ok to restart

this will disable all the programs that will load up during start up and make it faster loading and speed up your pc.
you dont need to select disable all- you can select your own i just click on disable all.

this utility is known as system configuration utility

ping has nothing to do with startup programs, it has to do with the time it takes for data to travel through the internet from your computer to the server.

unless a startup program is using vast amount of internet resources (like a BitTorrent client seeding) it will not affect your ping.

msconfig is, however, a valuable tool and very good for speeding your computer up.

HOWEVER, your tutorial instructs people to disable all startup programs. This may interfere with certain system activities that you may not want to interfere with, e.g. graphics card interfaces, sound interfaces, mouse interfaces, Java, Quicktime, etc.

Disabling all startup programs may impede your usage of certain features on your computer. You're free to try disabling all of them but if you observe certain functions of your computer that you use no longer functioning after doing this you should seek technical support from someone who knows what they're doing (like myself).

what birdie said, if someone is a newbie to msconfig and they disable drivers they probably wont know which they need to turn back on. thats if they can get windows to load properly 0o
*in the fine print definition of being server active* ....{FC}[ZA]Althor, will no longer be server active

I don't know enough about computers to know exactly what's what but I do enough not to start disabling stuff without knowing what it is. I'll take a look tomorrow but, be cautious, people.

Just about all of the stuff I've ever seen in the "startup" section of Msconfig isn't vital for system integrity. It's the "services" section that you really have to watch out for. Messing in there can cripple your system.

Does it matter on the start up tab that there is some Intel stuff? Also my wireless net etc... Since it's not starting up with that stuff, will all that stuff still work etc?

Ok so I selected disable all for start up... Now only my internet icon comes up on the toolbar... My anti-virus etc is all turned off so am I just meant to manually turn these on, or what? It's running so much faster though and everything seems to work... It's just the toolbar icons don't show up, but that's fine, I guess...

Most antivirus programs will probably try to override any action to disable them, as a security measure.

I doubt disabling everything will completely mess up your computer, but I would keep services that I use, such as wireless connections and antivirus.

I use Smart Defrag. Actually used it yesterday, I fully optimized my computer and everything runs so smoothly now, and everything pops up so quickly.

If the icons aren't appearing in the notification area of the taskbar that usually means they're not running. Although sometimes the icons themselves are just shortcuts to a user interface for modification and aren't directly linked the program's main function. Just don't make any assumptions without evidence.

Smart Defrag is decent, I personally use Raxco Perfect Disk Professional with Auslogic's Disk Defrag. Auslogics = fast and effecient Defrag, Raxco = keeps hard drive 100% healthy (actually prevents file fragmentation, 196,000 fragments prevented so far.)

I then use CCleaner for Registry & temporary file cleaning and WinDirStat for finding files to manually delete.

@Brick: Checking for updates isn't very relevant. In fact, most updates offered by microsoft update are useless and actually bog down your system... Service pack updates are good though.

the icon on the notification area will not show up, all those prgram has been disabled so that it wont run on the background to make your pc faster and you can always turn them on manually. your network and antivirus should be working though.

I was ending processes the other day and got "blue-screened", so yes, be careful what you're doing.

EDIT: I was not blue screened following these steps, it was my own intuition that caused it.

a way to skip all the fun stuff would be to use a game mode program like game booster, ik what i can and cant live without so i dont bother with them. pretty much they turn off all but your core services ect temporarily
