i was playing the stats server today when cnr church started talking about a planet going to collide with earth. at first i think its that 2012 crap but as he got more into it i searched it up and i found 3 things : this planet 12 is supposedly capable of supporting life 2. its orbit is rare a ellipitical orbit which goes around 2 suns and 3. this planet defies all we knoew about astronomy. im posting this to get your opinons about this matter i still think its bullshit thou

its totally not true lol. the earth is the only planet that can support life is earth. nd plus there is to many planets in between us nd this planet 12. i doubt it will happen. actually i know it wont lol

ulrics is partially correct there are the no planets tht have a decent shot of supporting us in our solar systems but i think the moons around jupiter are capable of supporting us we are just not having enough funding to be able to set up a habitat there.

The earth is the only planet we know of that can support life.
As for this, there's so much shit in our own solar system (comets, asteroids, meteors) we're far more likely to hit them rather than this lone planet. space is BIG. The chances of two things colliding are tiny.

earth will be destroyed by humans themselves so don't worry about getting hit by another planet, but it will be a while before earth gets mad on us and destroy itself just to start a new beginning. |

There are, however, a few that some people suggest might be able to support life, in our solar system. However, our solar system is a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny (very tiny) fraction of the whole universe - who knows what's our there?
I don't think the chances of two things colliding are actually that tiny. Quite a lot of objects from space collide with Earth every year - they're just not very big. Besides, the movement of bodies through space is by no means random, so I don't think chance has that much to do with it. Something massive like the Earth has enough gravity to pull other bodies towards it.

Yes, very small asteroids and meteorites and whatnot but there are thousands, million of them in the solar system that we haven't hit. We're talking about massive planets and stuff. The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was about 6 miles across and that's massive but it's by no means a planet. Consider the tiny speck in our own solar system, let alone the entire universe, that is the earth. The chances of another planet like ours colliding with it is astronomically (literally) tiny.

So, it is impossible that it could have started moving hundreds, maybe even thousands of years ago? There is actually a bigger chance of this happening then you guys are saying. There are many planets that can support life. Just none that we know of yet. If earth can support life, who is to say other planets can't either. There are millions upon millions of galaxies in the universe. As you pointed out before, we are just a small speck in one solar system. In a galaxy, there are millions of solar systems. Some with even more planets than ours. And you find it hard to believe that another planet can support life, none the less hit earth? If that planet was hit by an asteroid and got it moving fast enough to not orbit the star in the solar system, you are saying it is almost physically impossible for it to travel to another solar system and hit another planet? No, it is very possible. And honestly, why would NASA lie about this? |

Yeah it's possible and I'm not saying there are no planets that can support life. It is unliekly though - and I didn't realise NASA had said this. Can you link me to this?

Only thing I've found about it is http://en.wikiped..._cataclysm. Apparently we're going to collide on July 21 with this planet in out solar system that doens't exist.
Might be something totally different but unless you can find an actual thing about this on the internets then I somehow doubt this.

If I remember correctly, there's a asteroid near-miss that's projected around (GET THIS) April, Friday the 13th, 2038. Near miss. But, apparently there's a slightly significant (as in, significant versus 2.3 in a billion chance) that it could swing around and hit us. If Neil DeGrasse Tyson's wrong, then my perception of reality is only but a lungfish.

Comets are in unstable orbits that evolve over time due to perturbations and outgassing. Tempel 1 passed within 0.04 AU (5.9 million kilometres) of the dwarf planet Ceres on November 11, 2011. Then, as a Jupiter-family comet, it will spend years interacting with the giant planet Jupiter, finally passing within 0.02 AU (3 million kilometres) of Mars on October 17, 2183.
