Everyone's heard of or been to or seen a school that has dress codes. Maybe it's a uniform, maybe it hair length, maybe its tatoos...

What's your stance on PUBLIC SCHOOLS enforcing a DRESS CODE?

WHY do you think school boards approve dress codes?

Do you support dress codes?

Do you have a dress code?

What do your parents think about dress codes?

I think they are good thing. It teaches kids that in the real world/work force you generally cant just wear what you want. Most employers even Wal-Mart have dress codes. I think it is a disservice to children not to prepare them for what adult life will be like and dress codes are definitely a part of being an adult.

Wow - I never thought of it that way. That is a good way of looking at it. I am very anti-dress code when it comes to hair, piercings, and most clothes - so long as there's nothing too sexy, too vulgar, or too violent. I don't care about baggy pants, or ripped jeans. I don't care if guys wear earings or anyone wears a nose ring. I don't care if anyone's hair is purple, etc etc etc.

The job thing - that's important though - like I said, never thought of it that way. I appreciate work places that have flexible rules on hair piercings and tattoos, too, but the truth is - money talks. I've removed my piercings more than once for jobs... and this past time - didn't put them back in cause when I'm a teacher they'll just have to be removed again.

However - kids in school - they're developing a sense of self, and they're also going through The Changes, its hard enough without the restriction of dress codes. So many of us define ourselves through hair.clothes.style.etc... Taking that away from someone for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year, for 12 years, when they're in the developmental stages of their self and ego? That's a bit excessive for my taste.

I think they have to compromise - if clothing restrictions are enacted - i think free hair rules, LOL!

This was an interesting topic of discussion in one of my teacher ed classes this week. The book we use for the class brought up an excellent point about dress codes especially for middle school ages and higher. When we have girls that are wearing tank tops that show their belly and short shorts who is looking at that girl....boys...all the time. This can be very distracting in the classroom where kids are trying to learn valuable life skills and information but instead they are too busy staring at the girls badonkadonk butt to listen to what the teacher is saying. The same situation could be reversed for girls looking at a handsome boy. If students were to all be wearing similar clothes it would release some of the mental tension they experience because of raging hormones and then they could concentrate on being better students.

I do agree with you somewhat on personal expression though but again will not personal expression be squashed in the work place either way? I think the earlier that students can learn that the better.

We have a dress code that is not enforced and at least half of the girls at our school look like prostitutes now as a guy I have no large complaints however it is a little rediculous when my boxers are longer then a girls skirt/shorts

My elementary and middle school had a strict dress code, but I never really hated it. Now in my high school, we literally have NO dress code. And the few rules we do have are never enforced. We basically wear what we want. But kinda relating to what Carnage said, our teachers and staff always tell us "We treat you like adults, so act like adults." In the end, employers are not going to send you a letter telling you what to wear. By high school you should already be mature enough to know what to do and not do to get where you want in life. If girls want to wear revealing clothes or boys want to wear their pants down to their knees, it is fine with me. In my opinion, at least by the time of high school, there should not be a real strict dress code. By this time young adults should know what to wear to get what they want. Whether it be for good or bad purposes.

In Britain, I think all school enforce uniform right from your first day of school. I've certainly had to wear uniform since I was five. That changes at Year 12 because 12 & 13 are optional but with the school leaving age raised (which is also bullshit) that might change.

I'm sure it makes a difference. It definitely makes the school look smarter and with some of the stupid fashions people my age have we might be better off like this. Girls used to wear skirts at my school but they were banned a few years back because they were getting too short.

When you're used to uniform from an early age, you don't notice it when you're in high school or when you're at work.

i think there should be stronger dress codes. god know my school didn't really enforce it ever.....

school board approve dress codes cuz it look like they're doing their job to their superiors lol.....

i support dress codes for what codes said however im against it for sports practices....lol

My mom think its okay to a extent. but kids should still be able to wear what they want for individuality sense. help one to grow one own thinking sort of.

ps: there a private colllege or something on that idea near me. where people have to wear one of the uniform they provide. couple choices. i think that cool. but damn...them ladies know how to wear a uniform Wink

ps:again: i bet slim will post saying something like only uniform women need is apron XD

Dress codes are a good thing, they bring a sense of equality, especially for the people who can't afford fancy designer clothes. Why force people to feel like an outcast due to their clothes???? Because weather we like to admit it or not the vast majority of us are very judgemental (TBH most of us have seen someone walking down the street and gone, "jesus look what their wearing".) A dress code doesn't like so many people like to argue destroy your individuality, no one is forcing you to wear your hair the same, or not allowing a peircin or a tattoo. You can still maintain your individuality with dress code.

Dress code also prepares you for later life, how dumb would u feel if u showed up to a business meeting in a sleeveless t-shirt? (i know judgemental thing again but appearances do matter, even if they dont define the kind of person you are.)

I had dress code in high school that to me seemed quite relaxed. We could wear any type of oxford or polo type shirt and then we could wear any kind of long pants. As long as our clothing wasn't ratty we were free to express ourselves within those parameters. I am not trying to say that I think students should all have to wear blue polos and khaki pants to school, but I do think there should be some standards of decency.

Well i both like and dislike them, i'm from england so every school has a uniform, in my school you couldnt have colored hair or earrings in ect.

When we got to 6th form (which from the ages of 16-18) (we finish school at 16) you could wear what ever you wanted as long as it wasnt to overbored.

Now i like uniforms because it gives a sense of pride for the school your going to and makes you look neat and clean.

I dislike them because being a girl i wanted to dye my hair and wear makeup and look good, everyone wearing the same thing isnt my idea of that Pfft

I didnt like my school that much, the teachers didnt do anything to help you, the guys in class where always just tossing things around or listening to music (yes i did it aswell but meh =3) The school used to be an all boys school and next to it an all girls schools, and these buildings were old like 150 years old.

I am kinda torn on the subject of dress codes. For the most part, I think they are stupid because of the reasons star said in her first post, but there are some things that shouldn't be allowed. I don't like the baggy pants. I mean seriously pull them up, no one wants to see your ass. Shirts with pot and stuff like that should also not be allowed. Shirts with alcohol... to an extent. I have a dress shirt that is black with beer bottles at the bottom. It is kick ass, but I can't wear it to school. I don't drink beer, it was just a cool shirt.

I think it's an good thing depending on your background.

Me, my family has never had that much money so I rarely go out shopping for clothes and having to wear a uniform in my highschool makes it easier on me having to waste less money on all kinds of clothes. I only own about 6-7 white polos and that is about it and about 5 khakis. I cannot imagine ever having to buy lots of clothes but that is just me.

plus i only have like 1 nice shirt I got for christmas and I use that for our '' casual fridays''

I guess they're OK, but I am a neutral to this kind of thing, I can't decide one way or another basically saying I agree with everyone here, can't really decide. we are allowed to wear navy blue, light blue, yellow/gold, & white shirts and khakis or navy blue pants/skirts, so yea like I said I am kinda neutral here.

My town is also the mix of as we call it because it rhymes and is catchy "hicks and spics" that being that there are mexicans like me and hicks like some of my friends not really anything else, it's either baggy pants and a stupid hat or cowboy boots bootcut pants and a cowboy hat lol

We didn't have uniforms in high school - but there were rules - no long hair or earrings on guys. No one with distracting hair styles or unusual colors on their hair, no visible piercings or tatoos, no drug related, gang related, violent, or sexual themed shirts, pants/skits/dresses 4 fingers below the knee or longer, no underwear showing on guys, no facial hair on guys.

That kinda junk.

What pissed me off about it was this:

Cheerleaders and football players could dye their hair school colors. Cheerleaders could wear short uniforms.
Drove me crazy to no end!

Once at the end of our 8th grade year the subject of uniforms came up. Now we're talking horrible looking uniforms that no kid would wear out of school. There was a huge outcry against it. Some kids that went to my old school couldn't afford to have 2 completely different wardrobes. Uniforms like that don't allow much individuality. The teachers never enforced the dress code, so it wasn't fair that they jumped straight to uniforms. Biggest problem of all, they were having the parents decide whether they would make us wear uniforms. At first we didn't have any say, so we complained a lot about that, and they let us vote. The uniforms, at least for now, aren't being used.
