So those of you who follow science news probably are aware that a month ago researchers at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland found that Neutrinos, small uncharged subatomic particles, travel faster then light. After review of their experiment by the larger scientific community if has been found that they forgot to account for the different reference frames of the satellites used for measurement of of both distance and time in the experiment, and the reference frame of the observed path of the neutrinos on Earth. AS such the adjust time of flight for the Neutrinos takes of ~64 nano seconds, giving them a speed comparable to that of light, and upholding Einsteins Relativity.
Feel free to check these out for better explanations.

Wu i now proclaim you, [ZA] Cave Johnson. wait, why are they calling it "neutrinos".

Darn I had seen this and was sooo hoping (yet remaining skeptical) that it was true. too bad.

Neutrinos are simply the particle they were using for the experiment. Their existence was first proposed in the 1930's and confirmed/detected in 1956. They are not naming the particle, which seems to be what you are implying.

SpeedAs of October 2011[update], the value of the neutrino velocity is the subject of theoretical and experimental studies.
[edit] TheoryBefore the idea of neutrino oscillations came up, it was generally assumed that neutrinos travel at the speed of light. Currently there exist different viewpoints at this subject.

According to the theory of relativity, the question of neutrino velocity is closely related to their mass. If neutrinos are massless, they must travel at the speed of light. However, if they carry a mass, they cannot reach the speed of light.

Within the framework of the SME theory various theorists have suggested that the neutrino might have a tachyonic nature,[28][29][30][31] while others have disputed the possibility.[32]

[edit] ExperimentIn the early 1980s, first measurements of neutrino speed were done using pulsed pion beams (produced by pulsed proton beams hitting a target). The pions decayed producing neutrinos, and the neutrino interactions observed within a time window in a detector at a distance were consistent with the speed of light. This measurement has been repeated using the MINOS detectors, which found the speed of 3 GeV neutrinos to be 1.000051(29) c. While the central value is higher than the speed of light, the uncertainty is great enough that the result does not rule out subluminal or luminal velocity at high confidence. This measurement set an upper bound on the mass of the muon neutrino of 50 MeV at 99% confidence.[33]

The same observation was made, on a somewhat larger scale, with supernova 1987A (SN 1987A). 10-MeV neutrinos from the supernova were detected within a time window that was consistent with a speed of light for the neutrinos. So far, the question of neutrino masses cannot be decided based on measurements of the neutrino speed.

In 2007 MINOS collaboration reported results measuring the flight-time of 3-GeV neutrinos yielding a speed exceeding that of light by 1.8-sigma significance.[34] However, those measurements were considered to be statistically consistent with neutrinos traveling at the speed of light.[35] Currently the detectors for the project are being upgraded, and new results are not expected until at least 2012.

In September 2011, the OPERA collaboration released calculations showing velocities of 17-GeV and 28-GeV neutrinos exceeding the speed of light in their experiments. (See: OPERA neutrino anomaly.)yw

Good job taking time to bold the Wikipedia article. Now if you had read the two sources in the OP you would know that they deal with the OPERA experiment and the way that the speeds were calculated by the group. As I said, the researchers forgot to adjust the speeds for the different reference frames of the GPS satellites and the detectors on Earth. When adjusted the results of the OPERA experiments are completely inline with Neutrinos not exceeding the speed of light.

And that's why you don't get super excited about something until it has been completely verified. I remember someone made a shout about this a while ago proclaiming how amazing it was and why we didn't comment on it. This is one reason.

Shame. It would have been interesting to see them actually go faster than light but Einstein's theory lives to see another day. I remember when the story first came out though that the researchers didn't believe it themselves and wanted other scientists to confirm the results.
