The right to life is more significant than the right to freedom, I think.
I don't necessarily agree with imprisonment, on those grounds, either. It does, however, seem a better alternative to taking life.
They still have a certain amount of freedom, but previous actions which constituted an abuse of freedom under the eyes of the government (a controversial issue in itself) have resulted in a reduction of their freedom. They are still free to think for themselves and, in some sense, to do what they want. It's not 1984. 2+2=4.
Anyway, the only reason I said that was to explain what I thought Mator meant when he said that forced labour has moral implications. It's not that relevant here, as both alternatives proposed so far have moral implications. It's just a matter of 'right to life' trumping all.

^dis kid.
I actually had to debate no death penalty vs. death penalty once. Some interesting arguments but when it comes down to it, it just doesn't make sense to maintain it. It's a system of the past, of the dark ages.
There is no convincing argument to maintain the death penalty given the fact that thousands of similarly "evil-doing" people are in prison for life rather than getting the death penalty due to circumstances. Maintaining the death penalty does not help "clean the world" because so few people get the sentence these days. In the end, the death penalty has outlived it's usefulness. So I say, DEATH TO THE DEATH PENALTY.

What you mean? Please explain.
Think Nazi Concentration Camps.
Forcing people to work against their will is immoral. Life is about freedom - take that away and you have only death. It's a matter of turning humans into machines.
Okay, lets get right to the point. Let's think about a place where we can put EXTREMELY dangerous people to do something productive that would help humanity or society as a whole. Such as making them build a hospital under VERY STRICT SUPERVISION.
That's an example, we just need to find a good one so we can make an easy transition from DEATH PENALTY to PRODUCTIVE LABOR. |

Adding to what Ninja said about the Nazi Concentration Camps, that was done because Hitler found it right. He was biased against people who were not Aryan. The same principle applies today. More African Americans are put to death every year for the same crimes that Whites commit. If the death penalty were to be applied, they must first weed out all prejudices out of the judicial system. Also, they must be sure that the person being held accountable for the crime to be the legitimate law breaker. This is more justified now due to DNA testing. Now to Brick's response. Thinking about rights as an American, it is easy to come to the conclusion that our Bill of "Rights" are just privileges. The Government has the "Right" to take away our "Unalienable-Rights" at any time. So just adding to this, can be taken away from all American citizens if the Government deems it worthy. Forcing "Extremely" dangerous criminals into work camps is just delaying the inevitable. These criminals will die in the justice system, so why delay the process and cause the Government millions of dollars. The death penalty should be placed into effect because it saves the Government money, it is less torturing to the person forced to work, and it is justice to the victim's family. |

Well, the family is not the one condoning the penalty. |

Death is not justice.
We've been over the money, you're wrong about saying it costs more to keep them alive.
The system is old and decrepit, filled with holes and shit.
Rights are inalienable, but some are sacrificed in compromising the rights of others. At that point it is then up to the others to seek just reparation that is seen as fitting by society. A truly advanced and civilized society will not seek death when there is another alternative. Death is a medieval form of justice. It should have NO place in our current system.

It's more expensive than just leaving them do die, no one is torturing these people and since when were we going by the victim's family's thirst for revenge?

Well I really don't give a freak where you live at.
Worldwide, death penalty is still taking someone's life.
We are smart enough to create another method, but never apply it. |
