But it looks as if WORD is being called upon. So maybe it's a variable. Let's leave it at that.

 WORD isn't string, a WORD is a data type that is two bytes (16 bits) long.

(reqData >> 16) & 0xFFFF; shifts reqData's bits to the right by 16. This gets rid of the low bytes (least significant 16 bits) as a DWORD can only contain 32 bits. & 0xFFFF ANDs the bits against 0xFFFF (16 bits that are all 1) and sets the result to 1 or 0 for each bit if both are 1.

WORD lo = (reqData & 0xFFFF);

Think of 0xFFFF as 0x0000FFFF, & against the reqData gives us the lo WORD as the first 16 bits will be set to zero (because the first 16 bits of 0x0000FFFF is zero)
