I'll be getting a new laptop in a few months. Can anyone recommend a decent brand or type or whatever? I've got about £650 ($1000) to spend on it. Something that's decent for gaming but also runs well all-round, preferably. At the moment I've been looking at some Acer Aspires and some Toshibas (the Satellite range) I think which look decent but who knows?

For the love of bewbs. Do not get Toshiba. Acer. Dell.Alienwear. Are good brands. I suggest you c customize y your laptop get b better stuff for b better price. This mean do not simply buy a laptop from store that on shelf simply b because it haz lot of glitters lol

I second that. Do not buy a Toshiba what ever you do. Just stick with high ram, 256 MB graphics card, and at least 2.7 or higher gigahertz processor. |

Not true. Their're such things as decent gaming laptops. But for the same price as those cost you could get a desktop that would be twice as good as it. Also you probably shouldn't get a Acer. Hp, Dell, Toshiba and MSI are good brands. (their're more good brands but can't think of anymore atm) You should post the specs of the ones you're looking at so we can say if they're good or not or w/e... Make sure it has like a 1gb+ dedicated video card as well and 4gb+ of ram. if it has a i5 or i7 processor then that should be good enough for you. It might have a low base clock on it like 2.2ghz but they usually have turbo boost up to 3-3.8ghz so it should be fine but make sure you check.

Why would I want to play Battlefield 3? I still have Battlefield 1942. Let me explain that my current PC has a 1.6GHz processer, 2GB of RAM and a 128MB graphics card. Anything I buy is going to be better than that. A decent gaming laptop to me is one that can run Left 4 Dead at higher than 1 frame per second.
I'm considering this one, the Acer Aspire 5755G (Intel i7, 8GB RAM, 2GB graphics card (nVidia GeForce), 750GB hard drive) which I'd say is okay for $1000. It's a couple of years old, I think, but I'm fine with missing out on Windows 8.
Edit: I know turbo boost on processors ups their speed but at the cost of what? Is it just battery life?

Do you actually need a laptop for school or do you want it for convenience? Do you actually need it to be portable? If not I would suggest a desktop. As Ezra said, you can get a twice better desktop for the same price or the same level for half the price.

At the moment, I'll probably just use it as a desktop but, going away to university next year, I'll need it to be fairly portable then.
Edit: I'm looking at desktop computers and I'm not seeing that they're 'twice as good for the same price' at all. I'm seeing that they're 'a bit better for three quarters of the price but you have to buy a monitor to go with it anyway so you're not really saving that much money'.

Well, if you are looking forward to play games that are from 2008 or older, then yes, a $1000 laptop with good cpu/inbuilt or mobile gpu would be good then.

Intel CPU's are energy efficient so it might use a bit more battery but it will only boost when it needs to so it shouldn't make much of a difference power wise. The specs on that sound decent for a laptop. How fast is the CPU on that one? Also Vulture, it would get a decent amount of fps on battlefield 3 anyway... You just need to lower the settings...

The processor? I think the i7 (most of the models anyway) does a bit over 2 GHz and boosts to around 3GHz.
