So, I am, well, was a big fan of Lance Armstrong. I still admire some of the things he has done for cancer research and his miraculous recovery from cancer.
So, in light of the new information of him finally admitting to Oprah that he had taken PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) what are your thoughts on Lance?
Right now I will just say that I hope/wish people will be able to keep what he did in his athletic career separate from all the good he has brought to the cancer community. I will post more of my opinion after I watch the interview tomorrow night and Friday.

I'm not a fan of cycling but I'm pretty sure he kind of planned to admit that he cheated but hey its not a sport id like so idc either way which is why he did so many things for cancer but still if you did great things to help the study and possible cure of cancer who cares if you cheated on that? Just take away his medal or something

He is a fraudulent cheat who constantly lied throughout his career that he had not taken performance-enhancing drugs and constantly claimed he was 100% legit.
The fact of him beating and contributing so much to the eventual defeat of cancer, while commendable, has absolutely no bearing on this case. He still couldn't win without cheating.
And that is where it ends for me. Cancer has nothing to do with cheating in the Tour de France.

I also think it was wrong of him to cheat in any competition. And yes, he couldn't win without cheating. But he is one of the best cyclist in the world. Without cheating, he still would of been better than most cyclists.
But the fact is, cancer research is way more important than the Tour de France. Health or sport? Health = cancer research, sport = Tour de France. |

Moony he was stripped of all 7 tour de france titles. 6 out of those 7 years, the titles could not be passed down to 2nd or 3rd place because those individuals have also taken PEDs or are being investigated for PEDs. Not saying that it justifies his use of PEDs, just putting that out there. I think he could have won without PEDs, not 7 titles, but maybe one or two. Prior to cycling he was an elite triathlete in his teenage years, beating some top pros before switching to cycling.

I don't think there's a problem with Armstrong. Yes he cheated, and yes, cheating is wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that he did so much for the development of Cancer research. Again, Brick said it perfectly, health is more important than the Tour De France.
I suppose the only thing I would do is strip him of his medals. I don't know much about Lance Armstrong, but he sounds like he was still a hero, cheat or not.

I don't approve of cheating. It's dishonest and unfair with regard to other competitors.
There are other ways to raise money / awareness for cancer research.
Although, many many cyclists seem to use PEDs, so I guess it's a little trivial.

I agree with Brick that I respect him for all the good he did for the Cancer research. Although I will no longer want to watch him cycle because of the fact that he cheated.

I agree with you as far as cancer research > sport.
However, you're attempting to build a wall between his achievements and his decision to cheat and in a way justify it. He still cheated.
If a Nobel Prize winning chemical scientist shortly after winning robbed a bank and killed four people, does that make it justifiable?

I don't think anyone's trying to justify it , we're all agreeing it was wrong for him to cheat,& like macca said , he was punished for it lost his titles and medals so were just saying its good that he did good things for cancer at least

Watched part 1 of his interview last night. He confessed to using all sorts of PEDs testosterone, cortisone, blooding doping, HGH. He was asked if he thought anyone could win without taking those drugs during that time period (that time period being the mid 90s), and he responded no. He stopped doping in 2005 and made a comeback in 2009. That year, he raced the TDF clean, and finished 3rd overall. Again, not trying to justify what he did as right or anything like that, but the culture of cycling at the time was that nearly everyone doped. The definition of cheating is to gain a competitive advantage over your rival, foe and he saw it as leveling the playing field. He didn't have access to anything that the other riders didn't have access to. Paul Tygrat claimed it was the most sophisticated drug ring in all of sport, but it was not even close to the east Germans drug use in the Olympic games. The way that drug testing worked during his years of cycling was that there was no out of competition testing, so all it took was proper scheduling of usage of the drugs and you would not fail a test.
The problem now with this situation for Lance is that he not only denied all the accusations against him for so long, its that he attacked so many of the accusers. He verbally attacked them, sued many, many people in order to keep his name clean. He has said that he willing be trying to make good by those people that he has hurt for the rest of his life and he realizes that some may never forgive him.

My problem isn't even that he cheated it's the way he treated everyone who accused him
Basically knowing he did cheat he sued put down and straight up bullied anyone who accused him and i'm just not ok with that

If you watched the whole report by the people who caught him (organization), its pretty complicated! The stuff he used/blood infusions, etc are just out of this world. These infusions/drugs could "very well" caused the cancer by deforming cells. I gotta agree with Moony here. One wrong and one right doesn't make you right.
He cheated everyone for years and brought down the awsome sport of cycling. He failed to admit it when he got caught and even now, probably admitted to Operah for favours. |

All the stuff Lanced used was pretty simple stuff to do. I don't really have a problem with the whole cheating ordeal. It's not right, but its cheating and it happens and that culture at the time was littered with cheaters. I, like Bvigil, have a problem with how he treated people. That is the thing that disappointed me most.
