Should the government control our lives?

Figured I'd start another debate. Slightly inspired by the gun and food control arguments but wanted to have a debate like this for a long time anyway.

Should the government control our lives? As in, should they control us with laws?
Influence(leaflets, etc) comes into this argument too, but mainly focusing on laws.

My opinion is that the government is currently a necessary evil. A lot of people just don't have the capacity to control their own lives properly. So the government has to control them in order to protect them.
But I believe that the government should avoid laws and should focus more on educating people to be self-sufficient so that the government is no longer a requirement.

I'm a firm anarchist. And I was thinking about this the other day

The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/13/new-york-approves-soda-ban-big-sugary-drinks_n_1880868.html) wrote:

NEW YORK CITY — Say goodbye to venti Frappuccinos, gallon movie theater slurpees and big sodas.

The city's Board of Health approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on large sugar-sweetened drinks at its monthly meeting Thursday morning. Nine members voted for it, and one abstained.

Under the plan, all restaurants, fast-food joints, delis, movie theaters, sports stadiums and even food carts will be barred from selling sugar-sweetened drinks in cups larger than 16 ounces

Now honestly, who does the government think they are? I have a right to be fat if I want to. Why are they saying that they cannot sell soft drinks in larger quantities?
The government today is more concerned from getting money by infringing on the private citizen's (s') rights. They get paid to look over things, exc. But this just crossed the line for me. Who the F*** are they to tell me what I can or cannot eat or drink (not counting drugs/alcohol)? Why does our government have the balls to look us in the eye, the people who's rights they SWORE to uphold, and say they cannot do or buy a PRODUCT.
Honestly, this makes me sick. The children of America have forgotten their rights. They have forgotten their past. We have gotten lazy, and we roll over and die when our government becomes our overlord. And it's appalling.

I agree with most of what you say. Mostly.

You don't want the other extreme with the government dictating every move of your life but no government is anarchy; if no government was necessary then there would be no government. So the government is necessary. A necessary evil though? No matter what your opinion of government is, it doesn't have to be bad. However, it has a bad image and, often, for good reason.

Exactly my friend. The government can start anytime to really educate us, but it's actually better to keep people "dumb" so more $$$ is received by the government, hence making them stronger.

Remember, a government can't exist if it doesn't have people to govern and tax.

The way everything is nowadays and all messed up, it's because almost everyone thinks money is more valuable than life. Perfect example: HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

I agree that total anarchy is a bad thing. But while Communistic (Idealistic) Anarchy is unattainable, it is possible to have anarchy with the legal system we have. Basically, handle it like a business.

1: International Government Board is small and deals only with commerce laws, international treatise, and war.
2: Communities form their own laws, which deal with crimes and punishments. No unusual or cruel punishments shall be made, and no unusual laws may be made.
3: Policing force which is regulated by the community board. To regulate corruption of the community board, their finances will be made open and their lives will be given over to being public servants. They get voted on. Once removed from the community board, one cannot return to it nor advice those on the board. Reelections will be held after every fiscal year.
4.National government will be elected by the community board. This is like "corporate" of a business. They do not communicate with the International Government Board, but they monitor the Community Board laws.
5: Court system would be the same as todays system.

Basically, downsize the government. Those conspiring with businesses will be immediately impeached. This is a rough idea so don't tear it too much lol

Speak for yourself. I, myself, am one of those people in this generation that have values and respect to everything. I'm a very hard worker and will work 12 hours straight for free, just because working is fun. Where I come from, my town is full of hard working people, no criminals, because they know what will happen to them by the people, not the police. It's mostly up to the way a human being is raised and it's environment.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm raised to live a peaceful life, help others in need, and police the land we live in (keep everything right, no crime).

And I agree with you 100% on what the government is doing to pitch as much money as they can.

Seriously, why can't we get larger amounts in a cup? Let's say it's for a family of four and it's more economical for the family? Oh look, it's more economical for the family, so the government needs to pinch that extra money they would have saved.

I'm just going to do what Hat told me to do, so I won't be out of line this time.

The correct response is not 'well obviously that's bollocks and you're an idiot'; tell them why they're wrong, not just that they're wrong.

It's basically disassembling a whole country, so basically each state is a country, unless it joins with another for example, if Texas and New Mexico have almost the same way of living, they will most likely be one country instead of two.

The question is, who do we put in power? Last time I checked, we got many business men and greedy people with power in the government.

Everything would work out better if there was just one single government around the world.

Don't pick and choose

And what do you mean by that?

Well of course we need government with laws. And the government has its own laws that the reps need to obide by themselves aka the constitution. Problem is the government tends to find loop holes in order to undermine us and control our way of life. They continue to find ways as people are becoming dumber and dumber. So my advice is to stay in school.

No basically it would be set up as it is now, where the states are under a national government, and the cities are under states.

Excepts cities have more power than states have more power than the national government. The national government keeps order between states, keeps things constitutional. The states do this to the cities but that is the limit of their influence. National laws are EXTREMELY BASIC.
Separate from the main national government is a separate entity which handles international issues like trade, wars, and crises, exc. ill make you a picture later to show the organization of this system.

The original argument I was making was just saying that people roll over and give their rights to the government while they get to choose what we can and cannot consume. Your reply made it seem as if you took one or two of my statements out of the context of my argument. For example, I don't really care too much about how much they are limited to sell, just that they are limiting people in quantities they are allowed to consume. I'm focusing on the concept of limiting just to prevent something (obesity) which I have a right to. Yes obesity is saddening, but like John from Brave New World, I am claiming a RIGHT to be unhappy.

@Ninja
My views on politics are insane and should never be released lol.

Like I'm saying, it's the persons responsibility to choose what is right for them to do. It is NOT the governments right, nor it is their responsibility to make decisions concerning the health of their citizens for them.

Surely there are better solutions as others have started getting at? Surely we should not be controlled by a higher force but rather controlled by ourselves, perhaps not just as individuals but as a collection of individuals?

No. Democracy implies that you have a higher government, even if it is apparently voted into power by the people. (likely a highly corrupted process)

Government is kind of like an insurance policy. They provide reimbursement of property when they use eminent domain don't they? Oh, wait. That's not true. The US government had the right to take your home and force you to move to build new things (highways, public service buildings). They say they will return the money lost from the homes destruction to the policy holder at a reasonable amount. What's the reasonable amount for destroying someone's home and FORCING them to move? The US government is failing to see the citizens humanity, they want total power and a quiet absolution to their people. That statement was against the government. What about fire the government? The government provides security and safety for its people. It ensures control. That's it's purpose. The government is able to protect millions of families from losing their homes from many programs (like foodstamps). Thomas Paine said in his Common Sense that the government was a necessary evil. I believe this to be true. I believe the US has blessed the world more than any other country in history. We may have had our dark moments, but that goodness still holds true to today.

It's mostly USA, that's why I always wondered why a lot of countries hates the country I'm living in lol, but now I understand.

Well a government can be good but it's really up to the citizens. Remember, without us citizens, there is no government.

Technically, it's not a breach of freedom. Because real freedom allows us to kill another, which is taking away the freedom of another. So a perfect government keeps 100% freedom to all without any loop holes, such as no murder. Government is to keep an order in life.

But the USA government is all about money $$$$$$$$, not the people. But they have to care for the people, because without them equals no people to govern, which equals no government.
