I won't be getting either for a long while- my 3DS is what keeps me happy- but if pressed for sides I suppose I'll end up siding with Xbox. They have bullet hell shmups with their sadistic difficulty, they have viva pinata, and they have Halo.
Don't see the need for PS consoles, they're just glorified home entertainment system bundles, if I'm honest.

What? Playstation has a lot more exclusives than Xbox, not to mention it's got a lot more gaming-based features in general.
If anything's a glorified home entertainment system bundle, it's the Xbox. 
Not that either's better than the other. The Playstation is a lot more game-focused than the Xbox though. |

Check out the sales figures for the PS2 and the Wii:
Sixth Gen
PS2: 153.6 million
Xbox: 24 million
Gamecube: 21.6 million
Seventh Gen
Wii: 99.38 million
360: 75.9 million
PS3: 70.2 million (as of September 2012 - the other two are from after Christmas)
No matter which way you look at it, both Nintendo's and Sony's home game consoles have had a greater impact on gaming than Microsoft's, especially considering Microsoft only came into the running in the sixth generation. Nintendo ruled home console gaming right from the 80s until the Sony PlayStation. The Playstation 2 is still the best selling console of all time and was only discontinued last month.
Whatever happened in the last generation, Nintendo and Sony are by no means 'failures to console gaming'.

You forgot to mention a very important factor... the prices!
I was talking about the impact that Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft had on gaming. The prices don't come into it. The sales are there to counter Vult's statement and no more.

If you're talking about sales, then you're only talking about the number of people handing over money to the companies. This says nothing about how the companies impacted gaming.
You need to look at current gaming patterns, how many people play on Xbox Live, PSN and whatever Wii has. And realistically, since you can't keep track of the offline games, you should also consider how many companies create games for each console. How many games are sold per console?

When it comes down to it, only the original Nintendo consoles made any impact on gaming.
Other than Nintendo's influences, any other influences were created by games. Games which could have been released on PC.
Consoles are merely another way to play games. They have no independant influence on gaming as a whole. |

Who cares about the prices? I would still buy Xbox 720 even if it was at $2000, but would never spend $50 if someone offered me a PS4 or Pii-U for that price. Sony consoles and portables suck along with Nintendo as well. Only thing I like about Nintendo is its Pokemon RPG games on the portables and Legend of Zelda + Super Smash Bros. on its consoles. Other than that, the rest of Nintendo games like Sonic, Mario Sports games, Metroid, all suck.

tbh I liked the PS4 reveal a lot, but I liked the ps3 reveal too and it just fell short to me so I guess I'll wait till they go head to head at E3 to decide

Just want to point out that Nintendo did set standards in the gaming industry that other game companys follow. For example, Zelda was the first to establish a Adventure type genre for video games(The Legend of Zelda in particular). Super Mario64 and Zelda OOT established revolutionary camera angles and a rich, 3D environment. Zelda established target-lock in OOT which was another standard established. If Nintendo wasn't so greedy in the past, and actually treated 3rd party game-developing companies such as SONY(which worked with developing games with Nintendo, Nintendo wouldn't be on the other side of the foot. They've been declining in sales, somewhat; such as the 3DS anticipation which created a surplus of 3DS after only being consistent after 2months. I just hope try don't make Zelda mainstream to increase profits, and what I mean by that is releasing a Zelda game every year. Sorry for the rant, but that's how I felt.
